Transparency and Education is Important When Exploring a Mini Face Lift Surgery.
This surgical procedure is done under a General Anesthesia as Day surgery. The procedure time is typically 3hrs. This can be longer if additional procedures are done at the same time. The procedure involves making an incision in the sideburn hairline, and this incision continues to come in front of the ear (hugging the natural contour) and finally stops in front of the ear lobule (the floppy part of the ear). The incision is deepened to below the skin which is then lifted up from the SMAS tissues (Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System). The SMAS is a key anatomical part of the face. If the skin alone is pulled tight, the results will not be long lasting. SMAS tightening is essential to get long lasting results. The SMAS layer is then sutured and excess areas are carefully remodeled to tighten up the deeper soft tissue. The skin is then carefully lifted in an upward direction and excess removed. Too much tension is avoided as this can create unnatural results, and also poor scars.
After a Mini Facelift, you would need to keep your head elevated, icing the area with ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes/4 to 6 times a day for the first 72hrs. ArnicaⓇ tablets by mouth will aid in reducing swelling and bruising internally, and ArnicaⓇ Gel locally on non-incision areas to minimize swelling and bruising. OTC pain medications (TylenolⓇ /Ibuprofen) are recommended for pain and discomfort. Antibiotics are NOT routinely prescribed. Stockings are placed to help prevent calf clots (DVT- Deep Venous Thrombosis), and should be left in place until you are walking adequately, as well as drinking plenty of fluids.
Common findings after surgery include bruising and swelling which are well managed with the after care strategies. Main issues that can happen with any surgery include poor scarring, distortion of the tragus (separate front part of the ear), distortion of the ear lobule, infection, facial nerve damage. The face always has some pre-existing asymmetries and these may persist. Some patients may need small touch-ups in the future to enhance the results achieved.
